Funnel & Lifecycle Design

Map user journeys, identify drop-off points, and build systems that move users from awareness to activation to retention.

How funnel design works

Funnel design means mapping every step a user takes from first touch to conversion, measuring drop-off at each stage, and systematically improving the path. It's how SaaS companies optimize free trial-to-paid conversion, how e-commerce sites reduce cart abandonment, and how marketplaces improve supply-side onboarding.

The core components are: funnel instrumentation (tracking every step), cohort analysis (understanding drop-off by segment), hypothesis generation (why users are leaving), and iteration (testing changes to improve conversion). We also map post-conversion funnels (onboarding, activation, engagement) to improve retention.

Most companies track top-level metrics (signups, conversions) but don't instrument the micro-steps in between. We focus on granular event tracking, session replay, and user feedback to understand exactly where users get stuck and why.
